Headshot. Kind of extreme... I'd've gone for centre of mass, less likely to be lethal, less headaches for the shooter as a result.

ahh I love Oregon...a shame I dont live there anymore

Oregon law does permit the use of deadly force if a homeowner feels a threat is imminent.

You hit what you hit. Especially in the dark, afraid, untrained and under stress.

It's not like the Western movies where you can shoot the gun out of the bad guy's hand or 'shoot to wound'.

I agree, though I would have said it's pure lunacy! However, I would also have aimed for center mass and emptied the cylinder. Shoot to kill or don't shoot!
