Southern Indiana woman calls 911 after her husband is attacked after a road rage incident.

A wife's frantic 911 call has now been publicly released following a southern Indiana road rage incident earlier this month.

The 911 operator tried to understand Cullum's desperate call for help after her husband, Matt, was beat up.

"Ma'am if you can't get a hold of yourself, I can't help you because I can't understand what you're saying," the operator said. "What's going on there?"

"Two guys just beat the (expletive deleted) out of him," Cullum said. "They tried to run me off the road and when we pulled over and they got out from behind him and beat the (expletive deleted) out of him and knocked him unconscious."

When Cullum first spoke to the operator, she told him her husband was unconscious, but then he started to come to and in the phone call his moaning can be heard.

Later in the phone call, Matt Cullum's voice can be heard. "My nose is bleeding," Matt Cullum said as an officer arrived at the scene. Heather Cullum also was able to tell police the license plate of the SUV involved in the incident.

Police later arrested 20-year-old Michael Shelby and a 16-year-old. Matt Cullum was rushed by ambulance to University of Louisville Hospital.

"His teeth are busted out. He's bleeding from his nose and his mouth, they got him in the back of the head," Heather Cullum said in the 911 call.

An attorney for the family said Matt Cullum suffered brain bleeding, a broken nose and several broken teeth from the attack.

Shelby is facing an aggravated battery charge. He's being held in the Clark County Jail. Prosecutors have also indicated they plan to ask the court to try the 16-year-old as an adult.

Shelby's attempt last week to have his bond reduced from $50,000 cash-only to a $15,000 court bond was denied by a Clark County judge.

(WHAS11) – A road rage dispute between strangers ends with one man fighting to stay alive.

Police say a young man in Jeffersonville is behind the crime and on Friday he answered to a judge.


He walked into Friday’s court hearing confident and calm - despite the charges against him.

He didn't have anything to say to us.

20-year-old Michael Shelby is charged with battery in what police call a random road rage assault.

Jeffersonville Police say Shelby and a 16-year-old got into a road rage fight with a man on Monday.

It all happened in a parking lot on Sharon Drive at the turning point.

Matthew Cullum and his wife were having car trouble and were driving slow.

Police say that upset Shelby who was driving behind them and he followed them in the parking lot.

Shelby and Cullum got into a verbal fight that turned violent quickly.

Shelby admits he punched Cullum but says he thought Cullum had a knife.

Police say after Cullum was on the ground Shelby and the 16-year-old continued to beat him.

But Shelby's family says he never kicked Cullum.

Friday’s court proceedings were closed but Shelby's family listened at the door.

They have this message for the victim's family.

“To the victim’s family I’m sorry that happened, Don’t get mad at my brother all the way,” Shelby’s family said.

Matthew Cullum is currently at University Hospital in critical condition. He has a traumatic brain bleed, a broken nose, and several broken teeth and is in a coma.

Jeffersonville Police say the 16-year-old is also facing charges.

Both Shelby and the juvenile are scheduled to be back in court on this case the week of December 20th.

As for Matthew he lost both of his jobs and is getting ready to start cognitive therapy to try and improve his memory. They do not have health insurance. He and his wife lost their home and are worried how they are going to pay for Christmas presents for his kids.

Good Grief, please tell me that 911 dispatcher no longer draws a paycheck with tax payers money!!!
Her being upset is nothing compared to other 911 calls I have heard. She is much more calm than some I have heard. This putz lacks serious empathy and job skills.
