A 59-year-old man was shot and killed by law enforcement officers early on April 27, 2010, after he fired into the home of a former girlfriend in Warrensburg, New York, and led sheriff's deputies and state police on a vehicle pursuit that ended in a gun battle just south of Lake George, authorities said.

The man was identified as Patrick E. Penders, of Bloody Pond Road in the town of Lake George. According to The Post-Star of Glens Falls, Penders fired five shots from a handgun into the side door of the woman's home on Monte Vista Drive in Warrensburg late on the night of April 26. The woman's daughter called 911. Neither the woman nor her daughter was hurt, authorities said.

Penders left in a sport utility vehicle and drove south as deputies pursued him. He crossed a set of spike strips several miles south of the home and kept going on shredded tires, the newspaper reported. He drove over a second set of spike strips in the village of Lake George and continued on the wheel rims before stopping around midnight at an intersection on Route 9N just south of the village.

Penders got out of the vehicle and fired at the deputies and troopers, who returned fire and killed him, authorities said. Warren County sheriff's Sgt. Ralph Bartlett was struck in the abdomen and needed 18 stitches. A second deputy, Sgt. Greg Riley, was hit but was not injured because his protective vest stopped the round, according to the Press-Republican.

Penders had a lengthy criminal record, police said. He fired at a state trooper in nearby Fort Ann in April 1993 and barricaded himself before surrendering, and state prison records showed he served nearly four years for that standoff. He had earlier been sent to prison after a first-degree robbery conviction in 1977.
