Christopher Neal, 22, was shot in the head and killed by William Paul Jones, an armed intruder who ordered him to call 911 inside a house in Comstock Township, Kalamazoo County, on December 1, 2019.

Jones opened the screen door and the interior back door of the house on Proctor Avenue near King Highway about 10 p.m. Neal jumped over the back of the couch to see what was happening. Neal and his wife, Haley Coe, did not know Jones and had not invited him in. Their two-year-old daughter was asleep in the next room.

Neal kept asking, "Who are you? What are you doing in my house? Who are you?" Coe later testified that Jones would not answer. Jones told Neal to call 911. While Neal was on the phone, Coe said, Jones pulled two handguns out of his waistband and waved them at the couple, aiming at each of them in turn.

"He was in a frantic state," Coe testified. "We were in a frantic state. It was frantic all over." The doors were locked and the couple were not allowed to leave. Coe said she remembers shouting over and over that he had two guns.

Jones shot Neal in the head. When officers moved in on the house, he shot and wounded three of them: a Kalamazoo public safety officer in the shoulder, a Michigan State Police trooper in the leg, and a Kalamazoo County sheriff's deputy.

Jones faced 19 felony counts. On June 24, 2022, a jury convicted him on 18 of them, including first-degree murder, and acquitted him of resisting arrest. On July 29, 2022, Kalamazoo County Circuit Judge Pamela Lightvoet imposed the mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
