A man walked up to the front door of Cristofori Jewelers in Newton, Mass., on the afternoon of March 17, 2011, and fired eight rounds through the glass while three people worked inside, according to Newton police.

The store, at 291 Watertown Street in the Newtonville section of the city, was open but kept locked, with customers buzzed in through the front door. When the shots came through the glass, the workers dropped to the floor. One of them called 911 as the gunman fled on foot.

No one was seriously wounded. Police initially said none of the three inside was hurt. At least one news account reported that a 23-year-old employee, the owner's daughter, was grazed in the leg by a bullet.

Investigators said the shooting did not appear to be a robbery. The gunman never tried to get inside and took nothing, police said. "For someone to have shot into a door with people on the other side, it's concerning to us," Lt. Bruce Apotheker told reporters. He said the act was not random and that the man had deliberately walked up to the door intending to shoot through it.

A witness, John Lagoudakis, said he heard the gunfire from nearby. "I turned and heard boom, boom, boom," he told reporters.

Police described the shooter as a white man, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall, wearing jeans, dark sneakers and a green hooded sweatshirt, and said he carried a silver .45-caliber handgun. Officers brought in canine units to search yards and streets around the store, but a security camera on the building failed to capture a clear image of the gunman.

Newton police classified the suspect as armed and dangerous and asked anyone with information to come forward. The department later released a recording of the 911 call placed from inside the store. No arrest in the case was publicly reported.
