Michael Brian Miller received two natural life sentences plus 10 1/2 years for fatally stabbing his wife, Adriana Miller, 28, and the couple's 10-year-old daughter, Valerie, and wounding their 4-year-old son at their Glendale home in 2009.

Miller called 911 from the home before dawn on May 30, 2009, and told the dispatcher he had just murdered his family, according to a Glendale police probable cause statement. Officers found Adriana Miller and Valerie dead on the dining room floor. Police said Miller had attacked them with a kitchen knife.

The couple's 4-year-old son had also been stabbed but was still breathing. He was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center and survived his injuries.

Miller told investigators he had argued with his wife the night before over his lack of sleep and "lost control," according to the Arizona Republic. He said "God and Lucifer" told him to kill and that he felt "consumed by Satan." Court documents described Miller as bipolar and schizophrenic. He told police he stabbed his son the most because he loved him the most.

Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas charged Miller on June 4, 2009, with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. Prosecutors initially sought the death penalty, but Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Paul McMurdie withdrew that request at the urging of the victims' family.

On Oct. 26, 2009, Miller pleaded guilty to all three counts. At his Dec. 10 sentencing, his sister-in-law, Araceli Santoyo, told the court her sister had cared for Miller despite his mental illness and never imagined she would have to defend herself against him. Miller's brother, Mitchell Miller, said the family had long worried about Michael's untreated symptoms and did not believe the man he knew had committed the crime.

McMurdie sentenced Miller to two natural life sentences plus an additional 10 1/2 years, meaning he will not be eligible for release. "This sentence brings to a close a tragic and deadly case of domestic violence," Thomas said in a statement. Arizona prison records show Miller remains held at the Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis under a natural life sentence.
