A 14-year-old girl hiding in a bedroom closet called 911 as two burglars broke into her family's home in Rossmoor, California, on the morning of July 21, 2014, leading sheriff's deputies to arrest two teenage boys, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

The girl was home alone when she heard someone at the front door and then noises at the windows, deputies said. She slipped into a bedroom closet and kept her voice low so she would not be heard.

"I think someone is in," she told dispatcher Candace Moran, according to a recording of the call the sheriff's department later released. "Did you hear the front door?" Moran asked, also speaking quietly. "I'm hearing the front door and the windows," the girl whispered back.

The girl told Moran where deputies could find her. "If you go down the hall, I'm the second door to the left," she said, adding, "I'm just kind of scared, to be honest." Moran told her four deputies and a police dog were already outside the house.

Deputies said two teenage boys had tried several doors and windows before getting inside. They fled on foot and jumped fences into a neighboring yard, where deputies caught them. Both were arrested and booked into Orange County Juvenile Hall; the sheriff's department did not release their names because they are minors.

The department credited the girl's composure for the fast arrest, saying in a statement that "the quick actions and calm demeanor demonstrated by the young informant led to an immediate response and arrest of the suspects."

The girl's father, who was not identified in news accounts, said she had texted him that someone was at the door, then sent a message he said no parent wants to get: "Please help." He said he and his wife had taught their daughters to stay calm in an emergency. "She handled it like a champion," he said.
