An 11-year-old girl who was home alone in Sandy, Utah, escaped an armed intruder and reached police from a neighbor's house, according to KSL and charging documents.

The girl was watching television at the family's home on Quail Run Drive on the afternoon of May 11, 2012, when she went to the kitchen for a snack and noticed the back door was open, KSL reported. She saw a man holding a gun.

When she reached for her cell phone, the man knocked it from her hand, put the gun to her chest and told her not to move, according to the station. Instead, she ran from the house. A next-door neighbor was not home, so she kept going to the next house, went in through an unlocked door and told the neighbor to call police.

On the 911 recording, a male neighbor tells the dispatcher he did not see the intruder and that the girl had run in saying someone had a gun, according to KSL. The girl then takes the phone. Asked whether the man had left on foot or in a vehicle, she says he was on foot. "No, I was inside on the couch watching TV," she tells the dispatcher, and says the weapon was a pistol.

The girl described the intruder as a man in his 20s, thinly built, with a goatee and long braided hair, KSL reported. She said he wore dark sunglasses, a black cap and plaid pants and carried a backpack. Officers arrived to find him gone and said he may have driven off in a silver, four-door car.

Investigators collected a blue-and-white bandana that did not belong to the family and sent it for DNA testing, according to charging documents. In September 2012, prosecutors charged Daniel Sloan Bonito, 26, with aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony, and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, a second-degree felony. DNA on the bandana matched Bonito and multiple tips pointed to him, prosecutors said.

Bonito was already being held at the Utah State Prison on unrelated charges when the new counts were filed, according to KSL.
