University of Georgia marketing professor George Zinkhan, 57, shot and killed his wife and two other people outside the Athens Community Theatre in Athens, Georgia, on April 25, 2009, then eluded a two-week manhunt before he was found dead in a shallow grave he had dug for himself.

Police said Zinkhan opened fire at a picnic reunion of the Town and Gown Players. The dead were his wife, Athens attorney Marie Bruce, 47, and two members of the theater group, Tom Tanner, 40, and Ben Teague, 63. Two bystanders were wounded by bullet fragments.

Several witnesses called 911 as the shooting unfolded. On one recording, a caller reported that a man had opened fire and then worked to stay composed while giving the dispatcher a description of the gunman.

Investigators said Tanner, an economist and a friend of Bruce's, appeared to be the intended target, and that Teague was killed by chance. Authorities said Zinkhan left his two young children in his car during the shooting, then dropped them with a neighbor, telling the neighbor there was an emergency.

Zinkhan was charged the same day with three counts of murder, and federal authorities later added a charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. He had bought a plane ticket to the Netherlands, and for a time investigators believed he might have left the country.

His red Jeep Liberty was found April 30 in northwest Clarke County. On May 9, cadaver dogs located his body about a mile away, in a grave he had dug behind an elementary school. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said he had shot himself in the head with a .38-caliber handgun. Police never established a motive.
