A Gainesville, Florida, man killed his father and wounded five other men during a 13-minute shooting spree across the city on a Monday afternoon before turning the gun on himself, police said.

Clifford Louis Miller Jr., 24, first shot his 52-year-old father, Clifford Miller Sr., then drove about three miles through north-central Gainesville on Oct. 4, 2010, firing on men at a series of stops, according to the Gainesville Police Department and the Alachua County Sheriff's Office.

The first emergency call reached dispatchers at 4:03 p.m. The last, at 4:16 p.m., came from Miller himself, who had phoned the sheriff's office before he was found dead in a friend's driveway with a .38-caliber revolver in his lap, authorities said. Investigators concluded the wound was self-inflicted.

Five men who were shot survived. Police identified them as Cedric Joiner, 36; Lloyd Dunn, 67; Paul Anthony Sr., 43; Vincent Saller, 43; and Anthony Mitchell, 44. Four were initially listed in critical condition and one in fair condition. Some of the shootings happened within the Gainesville city limits and others in the surrounding county, drawing responses from both the city police and the sheriff's office.

Police said Miller appeared to know each of the men he shot, but investigators did not establish why he opened fire. "Right now, we do not have a motive," a police spokesman said in the days after the shooting.

Court and arrest records showed Miller had a long history of trouble that included a cocaine-possession conviction at 19, later arrests for battery, breaking and entering, reckless driving and driving under the influence, and probation violations. Before the shooting, a judge had found him mentally incompetent to stand trial on pending charges and ordered medication and psychiatric treatment, records showed.

The recording below carries the emergency and police radio traffic from that afternoon, as calls came in from across the multi-block scene and units worked to locate a suspect who was still on the move.
