Michael Roseboro, 42, was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced in September 2009 to life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing his wife Jan, 45, at their home in Denver, Pennsylvania.

On the night of July 22, 2008, Roseboro called Lancaster County 911 to report that he had found Jan Roseboro face down in the deep end of the swimming pool behind their home. On the call, he tells the dispatcher he has pulled her out, and she talks him through what to do while an ambulance is sent.

Roseboro says he has given her rescue breaths about thirty times. The dispatcher asks him to check her mouth for anything blocking it. Jan Roseboro, a mother of four, was pronounced dead.

Roseboro ran his family's century-old funeral home in the same town, and the couple were well known there. He told police an intruder must have killed her, and reported that about 40,000 dollars worth of jewelry had gone missing the same day. The death was initially treated as an accidental drowning.

The autopsy changed that. Jan had been beaten and strangled before she went into the water, and investigators later found Roseboro's DNA under her fingernails.

A tip led detectives to an affair with Angela Funk, a married mother of two who lived near the funeral home. It had been going on about seven weeks when it came to light. Prosecutors argued he wanted to be with her without the cost and exposure of a divorce.

The recording is Roseboro's own call, running about two and a half minutes. It is the caller reporting a drowning he had staged, and the dispatcher coaching resuscitation on someone who had already been beaten and strangled. Nothing in the call suggests the dispatcher knew that.
