Four people were killed inside a West Seattle house on Sept. 23, 2010, in a mass murder-suicide that Seattle police said was carried out by a 60-year-old woman who lived there.

Officers were sent to the 9400 block of 14th Avenue Southwest at about 1:31 p.m. on reports of shots fired. Arriving units found a wounded woman on the street a block away, in the 1400 block of Southwest Roxbury Street, and could still hear gunfire coming from the house, police said. The woman told officers, "My mom has gone crazy."

As officers moved on the address, a man in his 50s ran past them into the house and at least two more shots were fired, according to the department. He came back out and told officers his wife had shot herself. Officers then went in and found four people dead. Seattle Fire Department medics were unable to revive any of them.

Police said the dead were a 43-year-old man, a 17-year-old girl, a 14-year-old girl and the 60-year-old woman they identified as the shooter. Relatives told news outlets that the woman was Saroeun Phan, known in the household as Chhouy Harm, and that she had killed her son-in-law, Chean Harm Phan, and her granddaughters, Jennifer Harm and Melina Harm. The wounded woman, Phan's 40-year-old daughter Thyda Harm, was taken to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries and was listed in satisfactory condition the next morning.

Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel said about 20 shots were fired inside the home, which was shared by 11 people from three extended families. Detectives recovered two handguns, a .25-caliber Beretta and a Taurus 9 mm. Several people in the house were not hurt, among them a 16-year-old boy, a 6-year-old girl and a woman who was upstairs when the shooting started.

The response tied up the neighborhood for hours. Southwest Roxbury Street was closed and two nearby elementary schools were put in shelter-in-place status while patrol officers, fire crews, SWAT and King County sheriff's deputies worked the scene, according to the neighborhood news site West Seattle Blog. Dispatchers passed along reports of an armed suspect and possible multiple victims, and a Cambodian translator was requested for the family. Relatives said Phan had struggled with schizophrenia and depression and that they did not know whether she had been taking her medication. Police said they had established no prior contact with her and no record of a diagnosed mental illness, and that no motive had been determined.

The recording runs about seven minutes and is Seattle police radio traffic from the incident, pulled from a dispatch logging tape. It covers the initial shots-fired broadcast, units staging and approaching the address while gunfire was still being reported, the medic response for the woman found out on the street, and the updates dispatchers fed to officers as they worked out what they were walking into.
