Umberto Delgado Jr., 22, of Tangerine, drowned late on Feb. 2, 2010, after his 2001 Chevrolet pickup ran off State Road 429 and into a retention pond near the Plant Street exit in Ocoee, Florida, according to the Florida Highway Patrol and multiple news reports.

Delgado called 911 as the truck filled with water, gave dispatchers his location and said he was trying to get out before the line went dead, according to the Associated Press and a WFTV report carried by the Palm Beach Post. He said he was worried the truck would sink.

Officials said skid marks near the water showed Delgado had tried to stop before going in. Orlando Fire Department divers found the truck submerged 6 to 8 feet down.

"We did notice some debris that led to a possible vehicle in the pond, at which time we notified the Orlando Fire Department's dive team," said Butch Stanley of the Ocoee Fire Department.

Delgado was pulled from the water outside his truck but had already drowned. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers said they did not know what caused Delgado to lose control, and it was not immediately known whether alcohol was a factor. Ocoee officials said the stretch of the toll road had no history of similar crashes.

Delgado's case was later cited in a Naples Daily News investigation, published that December, into how 911 dispatchers nationwide handle calls from motorists trapped in sinking vehicles. The newspaper found Delgado gave his location during the call but was never instructed to escape through a window, one of seven similar cases it reviewed dating to 2006.

Delgado is buried at Edgewood-Greenwood Cemetery in Apopka, where his headstone identifies him as a loving father.
