A Fayetteville police officer fatally shot 26-year-old Kenmara Davis on Thanksgiving night after responding to 911 calls about gunfire in a residential neighborhood, and Davis's family and neighbors have questioned the department's account of a self-defense shooting.

Davis died at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center after he was shot shortly after 9 p.m. Nov. 27 near Hawkins Drive and Lynn Avenue, according to police. Officers were sent to the area after residents reported hearing multiple shots.

Police spokeswoman Theresa Chance said Officer Michael Yount found Davis in the street and began to question him. "The gentleman pulled out a gun and fired shots, to which the officer in self defense fired back," Chance said.

The recording posted here is police radio traffic from the response, not a 911 call. On it, an officer reports a man down in the roadway and calls urgently for medics.

Neighbor Melvin Gray said Davis was running from the officer when the shots were fired and appeared to have been hit in the back. "It was obvious he had been shot in the back, because blood was all over his back," Gray said. He said he heard six to eight shots.

The State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the shooting, and Yount was placed on administrative duty, both standard steps when an officer shoots someone, police said. An autopsy found Davis had a single gunshot wound and was highly intoxicated. The Cumberland County District Attorney's office cleared Yount in June after he shot a man in the leg during an attack on his police dog.
