Father Calls 911 to Confess Killing Daughter, Granddaughter

A Skokie man told a 911 dispatcher that he had killed his teenage daughter and 2-year-old granddaughter, and officers who responded to the call found both dead inside the apartment where he rented a room, according to police and news accounts of the October 2011 killings.

Miguel Renteria, 39, placed the call on the afternoon of Oct. 26, 2011, from the 4600 block of Main Street, near Kilpatrick Avenue, authorities said. He reported that his daughter and granddaughter were dead, and when the dispatcher asked how, he said he had killed them with a knife, according to reports of the call from NBC Chicago and CBS Chicago. Officers who responded found Renteria with blood on his hands.

The victims were Cynthia Renteria, 18, and her daughter, Jeiloni Renteria, 2, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Cynthia had been strangled and stabbed in the chest, and the toddler had multiple stab wounds. Both deaths were ruled homicides.

The Cook County State's Attorney's office approved two counts of first-degree murder. Renteria was charged at the Skokie courthouse, where prosecutor Diann Sheridan outlined the case, and an arraignment was scheduled for December 2011, according to the Skokie Patch. Investigators said no motive had been established.

Renteria had a long criminal record, with more than 15 arrests since 1990 and a 1993 conviction for aggravated battery that carried a five-year prison term, according to the Chicago Tribune. His father told the newspaper that Renteria was a troubled man who had sought psychiatric treatment over the years, and said of the victims, "The girls had no blame for what happened." Cynthia's mother, Aleksandra Santiago, described her as a loving young mother.

At a bench trial in September 2013, a Cook County judge found Renteria not guilty by reason of insanity in both deaths, according to ABC7 Chicago. The court scheduled a hearing the following month to determine his placement, which under Illinois law directs such defendants into the custody of state mental health authorities rather than prison.
