On September 5, 2020, at about 1 a.m., Officers Johnson and Gurskis and Sgt. Salgado responded to a call of a person stabbed with a knife. They spoke with a friend of the assault victim and learned the offender had fled and had been seen near 4899 S. Lavergne Ave., in Vittum Park.

The officers went to the park and encountered a man in the middle of it. Officer Gurskis and Sgt. Salgado approached and gave verbal commands to show his hands, while Officer Johnson stayed by the squad car with a detainee.

The man began approaching them, advanced toward Officer Gurskis, then focused on Sgt. Salgado. With a knife in his right hand, he quickly closed the distance to Sgt. Salgado. Sgt. Salgado had her Taser ready and deployed it twice. The man briefly went down, then got up, ran at Sgt. Salgado, and stabbed her in the vest several times.

Officer Johnson ran toward Sgt. Salgado and Officer Gurskis. Officers Johnson and Gurskis fired at the man several times. He stopped, fell to the ground, and was later pronounced dead.

During the initial search, the officers encountered another person they believed fit the offender's description and detained him. While he was detained, he and Officer Johnson got into a verbal altercation captured on body-worn cameras. Officer Johnson used words to the effect of "*****," "Fuck," "Motherfucking," "Goddamn," and "I'm yo bitch."
