A 15-year-old girl set off a nationwide Amber Alert in August 2011 with a frantic 911 call reporting a home-invasion abduction that police later determined she had staged so she could run away from home, according to the Aurora Police Department.

Jasmine Fike called 911 on the morning of Aug. 19, 2011, telling a dispatcher that a man had forced his way into her Aurora, Colorado, home. "Someone just broke into my house and he's trying to take me," she said, according to a recording of the call. "Please come. Hurry." When officers arrived, she was gone.

Investigators said Fike had given her mother enough detail to point them at a specific suspect: Franky Sessions, a 37-year-old convicted drug dealer she claimed had driven off with her in a green Chevrolet Tahoe. Aurora police issued an Amber Alert that spread nationally, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children circulated a poster. Detectives from several agencies, including the FBI, joined the search.

The case unraveled after officers located Sessions. Police said he had no involvement in any abduction and that investigators found no evidence to support Fike's account. Authorities concluded the kidnapping had been fabricated and that the girl had left home voluntarily. The Amber Alert was canceled.

A tip three days later led detectives to a motel in the 14200 block of East Colfax Avenue, Detective Robert Friel said. Sgt. Joe Young spotted a girl near a fast-food restaurant just west of the motel on Aug. 22. She had cut and bleached her hair and was registered under a false name, but Young recognized her and took her into custody without incident. Police said she was in good condition and needed no medical care.

Fike was booked into a juvenile detention center, where police said she faced charges related to filing a false report. Because she was a minor, the resolution of the juvenile case was not made public.
