Michael Moore was convicted Sept. 25, 2013, in Boone County, Kentucky, of murdering his parents, Warren Moore, 66, and Madge Moore, 65, and was later sentenced to two consecutive life-without-parole terms.

Moore had called 911 on the night of June 12, 2009, to report that a masked man had broken into his parents' home on Indian Hill Drive in Union, Kentucky, and shot all three of them. Warren Moore and Madge Moore were later pronounced dead of gunshot wounds to the head. Michael Moore, then 39, had a wound to his leg.

Boone County sheriff's investigators did not accept his account. Already held in the county jail on an unrelated charge of illegally obtaining prescription drugs, Moore was served in September 2009 with a warrant charging him with murdering his parents, tampering with evidence, falsely reporting an incident and illegally possessing a handgun as a convicted felon. He was held on $250,000 bond and pleaded not guilty that December.

Warren Moore had spent 20 years as mayor of Union before becoming the city's administrator. His son was a former Warren County, Ohio, sheriff's deputy who had been fired in 2004 after being charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and stealing marijuana that had been seized as evidence, according to United Press International.

At trial in September 2013, prosecutors said Moore had lied to his parents about a trip to Atlanta and was instead using drugs at a nearby hotel. They said he killed his parents after an argument over his drug use and his mother's pain medication. His attorney said Warren Moore shot Madge Moore during a fight in the kitchen and that Michael Moore then wrestled the gun from his father and shot him in self-defense, taking bullets to the leg and groin in the struggle.

Moore testified in his own defense, abandoning the masked-intruder story he had told for years. The jury convicted him of two counts of murder, tampering with evidence and falsely reporting an incident, and recommended life in prison without parole rather than death. In 2014, he separately pleaded guilty to possessing a handgun as a convicted felon and to multiple counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, drawing an additional 10-year sentence.
