A Vermont man robbed a Daytona Beach bank in December 2010 by handing a teller a five-page note that threatened to kill everyone inside unless he was given all of the cash on hand, federal court records show. He had been out of federal prison for 11 days.

Scott Edward Nelson, then 46, walked into a Wachovia branch in Daytona Beach on Dec. 7, 2010, and passed an employee a handwritten note claiming he was carrying a bomb, a .45-caliber handgun, a Taser and pepper spray, according to the FBI. The note said everyone in the bank would die unless he received all of the "paper money," the agency said.

An employee called 911 as Nelson collected a large amount of cash and fled on foot. Daytona Beach police caught him in the parking lot minutes later, according to the FBI.

Nelson had left behind a device built to look like a homemade bomb. Investigators determined it was a fake, but the threat prompted the lockdown and evacuation of a nearby hospital and school, the FBI said.

Court records show Nelson had been released from federal prison in mid-May 2010, about 11 days before the robbery. He had a long criminal history, including a 1994 Vermont case in which he attacked his father and forced him to rob a bank. Federal filings later cited repeated assaults and threats he made behind bars.

Nelson pleaded guilty on Feb. 18, 2011, to bank robbery with a dangerous weapon, the FBI said. He was sentenced to about seven years in federal prison and was released again in mid-May 2017.

That September, Nelson abducted Jennifer Fulford, a 56-year-old nanny, from a home in Winter Park and killed her, leaving her body in a wooded area of Orange County. He was arrested that October. A jury convicted him of first-degree murder and related charges in June 2019, and he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
