A suicidal Michigan motorist who led police on a chase that reached 80 mph gave up after dialing 911 himself and reaching a dispatcher who guided him to a stop, according to a report published by Dispatch Magazine On-Line.

Luis Bonilla-Machado, 25, had been reported as suicidal by his wife when an officer saw him run a red light in Allegan County, in western Michigan, the account said. He did not yield, and the pursuit that followed climbed to about 80 mph.

Apparently afraid to stop, Bonilla-Machado called 911 during the chase and was connected to Allegan County Central Dispatch dispatcher Tammy Gane, the report said. Over roughly eight minutes, Gane talked him through bringing the car to a halt, telling him to "Hit your brakes" and to "Put your car in park."

Bonilla-Machado pulled over and surrendered without injury to himself, the officers or other drivers, according to the account.

The center's assistant director, Tammy Bruce, told a reporter that Gane had remained "empathetic to the situation, thinking of his safety as well as the officers responding."

Officers reported finding cocaine in the car and on Bonilla-Machado's face after the arrest, the report said. A recording of the 911 call was later released.
