Nicholas Moeder, 27, of Shawnee, Kansas, was electrocuted early on June 16, 2013, after he stepped on a downed power line while playing disc golf at Rosedale Park in Kansas City, Kansas, according to the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office.

Moeder and a friend had gone to the park after a night out and were playing in the dark when he ran into the line, which a storm had knocked down the day before, Sheriff's Lt. Kelli Bailiff said. Officers were first called to the park at 3:22 a.m.

The friend saw Moeder tangled in the wire and grabbed him in an attempt to pull him free, suffering a shock and minor injuries himself, Bailiff said. "You're not supposed to touch somebody you believe is connected to a live wire," she said, but added that the instinct to help a close friend was hard to override. Moeder was already dead by the time officers arrived.

The park's course was hosting the Kansas City Wide Open, a Professional Disc Golf Association tour stop, when the storm hit that Saturday. Play was halted once the line came down, and the tournament's final round was moved to another course the next day. Neither Moeder nor his friend was registered to play in the event, Bailiff said.

The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities cut power to the line once it learned of the contact. Bailiff said the park's lack of working lights that night made the hazard hard to spot, since a downed wire lying in grass can be difficult to see.

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, along with the Board of Public Utilities, later settled a lawsuit brought by Moeder's mother over the death, according to a 2017 account published by The Pitch, a Kansas City alternative newsweekly. The settlement's terms and date were not disclosed in that report. A single disc has since been mounted on the utility pole near where Moeder died.
