Did This Father Commit Suicide

In May 2010 a father and his 7 year-old son crashed off I-17 north of Phoenix, and the father dialed 911 for help.

A Yavapai County sheriff’s dispatcher talked to the man for over two minutes and then ended the call. DPS officers and deputies couldn’t located the victim’s who were found dead two days later.

The press questioned why no helicopter was initially dispatched, and why the victim’s phone number wasn’t traced to his home. There are questions Conrad Hernandez had taken his son out of school mid-day, drove north and made up the 911 call about the crash to cover a suicide. He was facing financial problems.

A Chandler man and his son died upon impact after the father drove their car off a cliff near Sunset Point in May, according to a report from the Arizona Department of Public Safety about the incident.

The report clarifies the events that took place before and after authorities say Conrad Hernandez, 47, killed himself and his 7-year-old son, Max, when Hernandez drove his car off a 200-foot cliff north of Phoenix near Interstate 17 in early May.

Five Highway Patrol officers and paramedics responded to the scene on the afternoon of May 7 after Hernandez placed an emergency call and told the dispatcher he had been in a car wreck and could not move. The officers who searched the scene could find no skid marks or broken guardrails to indicate that a car had left the highway.

After Hernandez's car was discovered, officers could find no evidence that he tried to apply the brakes as he drove toward the cliff and only one sign that the car had swerved - to avoid a bush is in its path.

Investigators believe Hernandez placed the call before he drove his car into the ravine.

When officers and paramedics could not locate Hernandez's car that Friday afternoon, they left the scene and cleared the call.

Police spent much of the weekend looking for Hernandez and his son after they were reported missing May 7.

A Chandler police detective who was looking for Hernandez and his son as part of a missing-persons case determined that Hernandez had last used his cellphone near the Sunset Point rest area and requested that a DPS helicopter search the area again May 9.

It took the helicopter less than an hour to locate the wrecked car, which was heavily damaged among rocks and trees in an area about 400 feet off the interstate.

The belief that Hernandez had called after he wrecked his car and the delay in dispatching a helicopter to search for the wreckage gave some credence to a theory that the two might have been saved if investigators had acted more quickly.

But a Yavapai County medical examiner's report indicates Hernandez and his son both died upon impact.

Hernandez's friends told investigating officers that he suffered from depression, was distraught over his family's financial situation and that he had spoken about committing suicide on multiple occasions in the past decade.
