Dewain Herring Murder Suspect 911 Call
H. Dewain Herring, a local attorney, was found guilty of murder and the illegal use of a firearm in connection with the 2006 shooting death of a nightclub manager, authorities said. The incident unfolded at Chastity's Gold Nightclub, a venue in Columbia, where the victim, identified as John Johnson, was fatally shot. On the night of January 29, 2006, Herring visited multiple entertainment spots, including another strip club, before arriving at Chastity's Gold. Following a confrontation regarding his conduct inside the club, Herring was removed from the premises. He later returned in his vehicle and fired shots through the establishment's entrance, resulting in Johnson's death. Law enforcement officials rapidly zeroed in on Herring as a primary suspect, aided by descriptions from witnesses and the identification of his vehicle's license plate. Subsequent investigative efforts led to a controversial search of Herring's garage, later deemed unlawful. However, a proper search warrant was obtained, allowing police to apprehend Herring at his residence. In his defense, Herring claimed a lack of memory concerning the incident. Nonetheless, forensic evidence, including ballistic analysis and gunshot residue found in his car, firmly established his connection to the crime. The court ultimately ruled that the police's procedures, from the initial search to Herring's arrest, were lawful under the given circumstances. ·
