A tragic incident in the Santa Clara community in April 2009, Abha Appu emerged as the sole survivor of a harrowing murder-suicide carried out by her husband, Devan Kalathat. Kalathat, an engineer with Yahoo, perpetrated the killing of their two children and three other family members before taking his own life. Abha Appu was critically wounded in the attack, having been shot six times.

This incident occurred in their home during what appeared to be a routine family gathering. After the attack, Abha Appu managed to escape and collapsed near a neighbor’s house, where she was found and given immediate assistance.

Initial investigations and media speculation suggested financial disagreements between Devan Kalathat and Abha Appu's family as a potential motive. However, these claims were strongly refuted by Abha and her family. They clarified that their financial situation was stable, with contributions from family members, including Abha's brother, who was employed by Hewlett Packard.

In the aftermath, Abha Appu expressed profound confusion and distress over her husband's actions. She described Kalathat as generally loving but noted his perfectionist tendencies. A benign tumor, discovered in Kalathat's head during the autopsy, was thought to possibly have influenced his behavior. Although not harmful, the tumor might have caused him headaches and potentially affected his mental state.
