Des Moines police Sgt. Larina Blad was dragged by a fleeing sport utility vehicle on Aug. 13, 2009, after she tried to stop a motorist suspected of driving drunk, according to police radio traffic released by the Des Moines Police Department.

Blad radioed dispatchers immediately after the vehicle struck her, telling them "I've been run over" and repeating the report as a dispatcher asked what had happened, the recording shows. She stayed on the radio long enough to give her location and a description of the fleeing vehicle, a white Chevrolet Tahoe.

The dispatcher put out a call for all available units and told responding officers that medics were already on the way. One of the first officers to reach Blad described her over the radio as alert, conscious and breathing.

Police said the driver, 24-year-old Irving Cartagena, was suspected of driving while intoxicated and was operating the Tahoe on a revoked license. Officers caught up with him a short distance from where Blad was struck and took him into custody in a nearby alley.

Blad was taken to a hospital with bruising and other injuries from being dragged, but she suffered no broken bones, police said.

The department made the radio traffic from the stop and the dispatch communications that followed public in the days after the incident.
