A Broward County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man who forced his way into a Tamarac home and stabbed his former girlfriend and her roommate early Sunday, authorities said, in an attack partly captured on the woman's 911 call.

The call came in shortly after 6 a.m. from a residence in the 7100 block of Southgate Boulevard, in the Southgate Villas complex. Maria Borrero, 21, told a dispatcher in a calm, measured voice that her ex-boyfriend, Mario Cruz, 27, had been knocking on her windows for about an hour and would not leave. She said Cruz had a history of violence and warned that he might turn violent.

Minutes into the call, a loud crash can be heard on the recording. Borrero told the dispatcher that Cruz had broken a window, then began screaming that he had a knife and was stabbing her. "He just stabbed us," she said before pleading for help.

A deputy arrived and confronted Cruz, who was still holding the knife, the Broward Sheriff's Office said. When Cruz refused to drop the weapon, the deputy opened fire and killed him.

Borrero and her roommate, Kavon Lee Nikfar, 29, were critically injured and taken to North Broward Medical Center, deputies said. Both survived the attack.

The Sheriff's Office identified the deputy as Gregory Stanley, 34, who joined the agency in 2002. Stanley was placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting was reviewed, which the agency said was standard procedure.

Cruz's death was the fourth fatal shooting by a Broward deputy in 2007.
