In September 2002, a confrontation occurred between Rocco Graziosa and former New York Yankees pitcher David Wells at a diner in New York. Graziosa was convicted of assault for punching Wells and knocking out two of his teeth during the incident. The trial lasted a week, and Graziosa was acquitted of two other charges. The jury deliberated for less than three hours before reaching the verdict. Graziosa, who was 27 years old at the time, faced up to a year in jail and was ordered to stay away from Wells​​.

Graziosa was acquitted of harassment and possession of a weapon -- a butter knife he was accused of waving at Wells after knocking the pitcher to the ground.
