Mark David Latunski was sentenced to life in prison without parole after Michigan State Police found the body of Kevin Bacon inside his Bennington Township house, about a month after another man called 911 saying he had escaped from the basement.

On November 25, 2019, a 29-year-old man ran from the house and called a Shiawassee County dispatcher. "I'm trying to get away from some creepy guy. He had me tied in his basement," he said. "I'm trying to escape from some guy who had me chained up in his basement."

The man could not say where he was. The dispatcher worked it out from what he could see and sent troopers toward West Tyrrell Road, east of Morse Road. He was less than a mile from the house he had left. During the seven-minute call, he is audibly out of breath, and the dispatcher tells him to get to someone's door and wait there.

A homeowner said he opened his door that afternoon to find the man wearing only a kilt, no shoes, in about 40-degree weather, holding a rag to his mouth because he was bleeding. Latunski pulled into the driveway at the same time as the Michigan State Police troopers. The man told police the activity had been consensual.

It was the second such call in about six weeks. On October 10, 2019, a 40-year-old New York man called 911 after cutting a leather strap off his ankles with a butcher knife and running from the same house. He told the dispatcher he did not want to file charges and only wanted to go home, and no charges were filed. State police said that after they took him somewhere safe to be questioned, he asked to go back to the house and stayed there another two or three days.

On December 28, 2019, Michigan State Police found Bacon, 25, of Swartz Creek, inside the house. Bacon had gone missing on Christmas Eve and had met Latunski through a dating app. Latunski pleaded guilty to murder in September 2022, and in October Shiawassee County Judge Matthew Stewart found the killing was premeditated first-degree murder. On December 15, 2022, Latunski, 53, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus 11 months to run concurrently for disinterment and mutilation of a dead body.
