A Munroe Falls man is serving a 13-year prison term after admitting he strangled his sister on New Year's Day in 2011 and then walked into the local police station to turn himself in, according to court records and news reports.

Lawrence Hanly, 37, pleaded guilty in Summit County Common Pleas Court to voluntary manslaughter and felonious assault in the death of his 32-year-old sister, Shannon Sayre, WOIO-TV reported. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

The killing happened Jan. 1, 2011, in Munroe Falls, a small city in the Akron area of northeast Ohio. Sayre, listed in her obituary as Shannon Sayre-Hanly, was pronounced dead that day. She was married and the mother of three children.

After the strangling, Hanly went to the Munroe Falls police station and called 911 to report that he had killed her, according to accounts of the case. Officers took him into custody without a struggle.

Prosecutors said Hanly attacked his sister after she disparaged and threatened to kill their mother, according to WOIO. The voluntary manslaughter charge he admitted to is a lesser count than the murder charge that a fatal strangling can bring in Ohio.

Hanly entered his plea and was sentenced in October 2011. He remained in the custody of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction under the 13-year term.
