A 13-year-old boy who had stayed home from school sick pulled his 57-year-old grandmother out of their burning house in Livingston County, Michigan, in the spring of 2008 after her home oxygen equipment caught fire, according to local news accounts.

The boy dialed 911 and reached Mara Spicer, a dispatcher with Livingston County Central Dispatch. Seconds into the call he set the phone down and went after his grandmother, leaving Spicer on an open line as she worked to keep contact and send firefighters to the home, the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus reported.

The woman relied on supplemental oxygen. The fire began after her oxygen equipment malfunctioned, according to the newspaper's account, and the boy was the only other person in the house at the time.

He managed to get his grandmother out of the burning home. She was critically injured in the fire but survived, and emergency officials credited the boy's quick actions with saving her life.

A recording of the call was later circulated by 911dispatch.com, a trade publication for public-safety communications, which pointed to it as an example of a young caller staying focused during a household emergency.
