A 5-year-old Akron, Ohio, boy is credited with saving his mother's life after he called 911 and stayed on the line while she lay unconscious from a heroin overdose, according to Akron police and local news reports.

The call came in on Jan. 27 from a home on Weiser Avenue on the city's south side, police said. The boy told the dispatcher his mother would not wake up, and his 2-month-old brother could be heard crying in the background.

Dispatcher Genau Nuosce asked whether the crying child was a brother or sister. "Yeah, I can't make him a bottle. I don't know how," the boy answered, according to a recording of the call aired by local media. At one point he said, "I'm so tired. I'm afraid I'm going to stay up all night."

Nuosce kept the boy talking until paramedics arrived, reassuring him as he waited. "Oh honey, you're not going to stay up all night. We're going to get someone to help you," she said on the recording. "You're being so brave right now."

Medics found the mother unresponsive and revived her. She was treated at a hospital and released, police said.

Prosecutors charged the woman, who was not named in police accounts, with two counts of child endangering and single counts of drug abuse and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the reports. A trial was scheduled for April, and both children were placed in the care of a relative.

Akron police praised Nuosce's handling of the call, describing her as calm throughout the emergency.
