Boy, 5, Calls 911 From Casino Hotel While Mom Gambles
A New York City woman was charged with risk of injury to a minor after her 5-year-old son called 911 from a Mohegan Sun hotel room and told a dispatcher he had been left alone while she gambled, Connecticut authorities said. Xiao Xu Wu, 38, was arrested Jan. 25 at the casino in Uncasville, police said. Her son had dialed 911 from the room himself, and a Mohegan Tribal Police dispatcher stayed on the line with the boy for more than four minutes, according to a recording of the call. On the recording, the dispatcher works to draw basic details out of the child, asking his name and how old he is. The boy first answers that he is 1, then 2, before the dispatcher concludes she is speaking with a young child who is by himself. The boy also indicated his mother had told him not to open the door for anyone, police said. Officers responded to the room and found the boy alone, according to police. His mother was located elsewhere in the resort. The child was turned over to Connecticut's child protective services, police said. Wu was held on $150,000 bail. While processing the arrest, police determined that Wu was also the subject of an outstanding immigration matter and an arrest warrant out of Rocky Mount, N.C., authorities said. In a statement, Mohegan Sun said it maintains "a no tolerance policy for things of this nature" and noted that the resort operates supervised child care centers, Kids Quest and Cyber Quest, for guests with children.
