Boulder Store Owners Killed by Employee

Two owners of a Boulder, Colorado, flooring store were shot to death inside the business on May 17, 2010, by a longtime employee who then killed himself, police said.

Officers were sent to Boulder Stove & Flooring, in the 2800 block of 30th Street, at 11:09 a.m. after a salesman and a customer reported hearing gunshots from an office at the back of the building. Both callers left before officers arrived and neither saw the shooting, police said. The front door was unlocked and the store was open for business. Three bodies were in the back office.

The dead were Sean Griffin, 40, and Staci Griffin, 41, a married couple from Longmont who bought the store in 2007, and Robert Montgomery, 50, of Boulder, who had worked there since January 2003. Boulder Police Chief Mark Beckner said Montgomery was the shooter in a murder-suicide, with no indication of a suspect at large or a wider risk to the public.

The Boulder County Coroner's Office found that Sean Griffin died of multiple gunshot wounds to the head, chest and abdomen, and that Staci Griffin died of multiple gunshot wounds to the chest. Montgomery died of a single gunshot wound. Investigators recovered a Smith & Wesson M&P 9 mm handgun from his hand, 13 spent shell casings, a live round in the chamber and a second magazine holding 10 rounds in his backpack.

Montgomery bought the gun on May 7, 10 days before the shooting, and had recently practiced with it, investigators said. Detectives said he was angry about changes the Griffins made to the store's sales commission and bonus system. He had complained to co-workers and written about the grievance in a journal and on his computer. The store's accountant told reporters Montgomery was earning more under the new arrangement, not less.

The Griffins were survived by a 13-year-old daughter, Avery. Neighbors in the couple's Prospect subdivision in south Longmont tied yellow ribbons around trees and lamp posts in the weeks that followed.

The recording is the police logging tape from that morning, about 36 minutes long. It carries the 911 calls from the store and the radio traffic as officers were dispatched, arrived and worked the scene.
