Bell Gardens Mayor Daniel Crespo, 45, was shot and killed by his wife, Lyvette Crespo, inside their home in the southeast Los Angeles County city on Sept. 30, 2014, in what investigators described as a domestic dispute.

Lyvette Crespo, then 43, fired the shots at the family's condominium in the 6300 block of Gage Avenue shortly after 2:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The couple's 19-year-old son, Daniel Crespo Jr., called 911 minutes later.

On the recording, the son told a dispatcher his parents had been arguing and that shots were fired. He said his mother had acted in self-defense. "It wasn't my mom's fault," he said, telling the operator she was upstairs crying and that the handgun was on the floor.

Authorities said the mayor and his wife argued before their son stepped in. During the confrontation the father struck the younger man, and Lyvette Crespo retrieved a handgun and shot her husband several times in the torso, investigators said.

The son and Lyvette Crespo were questioned for hours and released the same night, and no charges were filed immediately. A grand jury later indicted Lyvette Crespo on a charge of voluntary manslaughter.

Her attorneys said she had endured years of abuse and fired to protect herself and her son, pointing to court records and an autopsy report they said documented violence in the household. Prosecutors and the mayor's relatives disputed that account, and a civil suit brought by his mother alleged the killing was premeditated.

Lyvette Crespo pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter on Nov. 30, 2016. A judge sentenced her the following January to 90 days in county jail, five years of probation and 500 hours of community service.
