Bank Robber Calls 911 on Himself, Waits at the Mall

A man robbed a downtown Cincinnati bank of about $2,000 on Jan. 13, 2012, then called 911 less than half an hour later to report himself and tell dispatchers where officers could find him, according to police accounts reported by the Cincinnati Enquirer and The Huffington Post.

Frank Coleman walked into a U.S. Bank branch in downtown Cincinnati around 2 p.m. and passed a note to a teller reading "put the money in the bag," police said. When the teller said she had no bag, Coleman handed over a plastic shopping bag of his own, according to the reports. He left with roughly $2,000 and did not display a weapon.

Less than 30 minutes after leaving the bank, Coleman dialed 911 and told a dispatcher that he was the robber, police said. He directed officers to Tower Place, a shopping mall a short distance from the branch, and police took him into custody there.

Accounts of how Coleman traveled from the bank to the mall differed. Some reports said he left by taxi, but a Cincinnati police officer disputed that he had flagged a cab, the Enquirer reported.

Investigators gave no motive for the robbery and no explanation for why Coleman turned himself in so quickly, according to the coverage. The recorded 911 call, in which Coleman reports himself and gives his location, is attached below.

Coleman was scheduled to be arraigned the day after his arrest. The final disposition of the case was not detailed in the available reporting.
