Dustin Friedland, a 30-year-old patent attorney from Hoboken, was shot in the head during a carjacking in the parking deck of The Mall at Short Hills in Millburn, New Jersey, on the night of December 15, 2013. As he lay bleeding on the concrete, his wife, Jamie Friedland, called 911 from the deck and begged dispatchers to send an ambulance.

The couple had finished holiday shopping and returned to their silver Range Rover on the third level of the deck, near the Nordstrom store, at about 9 p.m., according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. Two men approached as Friedland was getting into the driver's seat. He was shot once and died at Morristown Medical Center shortly before midnight.

On the recording of the 911 call, Jamie Friedland can be heard pleading for help and pressing the dispatcher on when it would arrive. 'Yes, it's an emergency. I'm at the Short Hills mall parking lot, and my husband has been shot,' she told the operator, according to CBS News. 'When? When? When? Give me a time,' she said later. The dispatcher answered, 'They're on their way, ma'am.'

The response time became a point of contention. Friedland's wife said it took roughly half an hour for an ambulance to reach the deck. Millburn police said officers arrived within about a minute of the first call and tried to save Friedland, and that the ambulance from the Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad reached the scene in about 17 to 18 minutes. Officials said the ambulance had trouble getting to the upper level because of the low ceiling in the parking structure.

Investigators said four men from Essex County drove to the mall that evening to steal a luxury vehicle. Hanif Thompson, Karif Ford, Basim Henry and Kevin Roberts were each charged with murder, felony murder, carjacking, conspiracy and weapons offenses. Friedland's Range Rover was later recovered in Newark.

Henry was the only defendant to take his case to trial. Prosecutors described him as the driver who brought the group to the mall. A jury convicted him of murder and related counts in 2017, and he was sentenced to life in prison plus 10 years.

The other three pleaded guilty. On January 18, 2018, Thompson, whom authorities identified as the gunman, was sentenced to 30 years without parole for felony murder, along with a term for a weapons count. Ford and Roberts each received 20 years for first-degree carjacking. 'I'm sorry that this happened,' Ford told the Friedland family in court. Henry, who did not fire the fatal shot, drew a longer term than the man who did because he went to trial rather than plead.
