Shawna Forde, leader of Minutemen American Defense, was sentenced to death after a Pima County jury convicted her in the May 30, 2009, Arivaca home invasion that killed Raul "Junior" Flores Jr., 29, and Brisenia Ylianna Flores, 9, and wounded Gina Marie Gonzalez, 31.

The shootings happened around 5 a.m. in Arivaca, an unincorporated community in Pima County about 60 miles southwest of Tucson, deputies said. The Pima County Sheriff's Department later released a 911 recording of Gonzalez reporting that her husband and 9-year-old daughter had been shot, then breaking off mid-call as the gunmen came back through the door and opened fire.

"They shot me and I pretended like I was dead," Gonzalez told the dispatcher, according to the recording. "My daughter was crying. They shot her, too." Asked whether the attackers were still there, she answered, "They're coming back in! They're coming back in!" Roughly nine shots follow on the tape, along with Gonzalez yelling at the intruders to get out of the house.

Authorities said the group knocked before dawn and identified themselves as law enforcement officers searching for a fugitive. Once inside, they shot Flores and Brisenia, who had been asleep on a couch in the family's mobile home. Gonzalez survived by lying still.

After the intruders left, Gonzalez called 911 and got a handgun, investigators said. When they came back in, she returned fire, hitting one of them in the leg. Deputies said that wound, and the blood left at the scene, helped tie a suspect to the killings.

Three people were arrested on June 12, 2009. Prosecutors identified Forde as the organizer and said the robbery was meant to bankroll Minutemen American Defense. Investigators said the crew expected to find drugs and cash, found neither, and left with inexpensive jewelry. Jason Eugene Bush, described by authorities as the shooter, and Albert Robert Gaxiola, an Arivaca resident, were charged with her.

Forde was convicted on Feb. 14, 2011, of two counts of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of Gonzalez, and related aggravated assault and robbery counts. She was sentenced to death eight days later. Bush was convicted and also sentenced to death, with 78 years added on the remaining counts. Gaxiola was convicted of murder, but jurors deadlocked on whether he should be executed. On Aug. 15, 2011, a judge gave him two life terms, one without the possibility of release, plus 54 years.
