Christopher Rains was sentenced to 36 years in prison on May 9, 2013, after pleading guilty to child abuse resulting in death for shooting his 9-month-old daughter, Trinity Rains, at a home in northwest Albuquerque.

Rains called 911 on Dec. 1, 2009, and told the dispatcher he had just shot the child in the head. Officers took him into custody when they arrived at the house.

"I just shot my baby, I just shot my baby," Rains, then 22, said on the call, according to KOAT-TV, which obtained the recording after it was released. He also told the dispatcher, "I shot her in the back of the head."

Police said the shooting followed an argument between Rains and the girl's mother, 18-year-old Ashley Trujillo, over whether Trujillo was seeing another man. In an arrest warrant, police said Rains "was pushed over the edge" while trading text messages with Trujillo, and that the dispute escalated when the two met in person.

"At that point, he picked up the daughter, put the gun to her head, and then fired the round into her head," Albuquerque police spokeswoman Nadine Hamby said. Police said that after the shooting, Rains asked Trujillo whether seeing another man "was worth it."

A grand jury indicted Rains on Dec. 16, 2009, on nine felony counts, including first-degree murder, child abuse resulting in death and kidnapping. He waived his arraignment later that month and his lawyer entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. He was held on a $500,000 cash-only bond. Police said another inmate, Eric Salazar, attacked Rains after one of his early court appearances, leaving him with minor scratches on his neck.

At one point, Rains' attorneys argued he had been denied a speedy trial and asked that the charges be dropped. A judge refused. He had been facing a first-degree murder charge when he pleaded guilty. "I know what I did was rottenly horrible. I have no excuse," Rains said in court. "There isn't a day goes by I don't think about this. I deserve way more than I got today. I know." Trinity's mother, grandmother and uncle spoke at the hearing. "You robbed me of everything I ever loved. How dare you?" Trujillo said.
