Macomb County MI - A 13-year-old Harrison Girl hid under a bed, and called 911 to report a home invasion at her home on Hamon Street in Harrison Township.

On December 15th, around 2:17 PM, 911 dispatch received a call from the little girl who said someone had broken in her home. As she hid under the bed she relayed information to dispatchers about the intruders.

Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said the Macomb County Prosecutors Office has authorized the following charges on the pair: 19-year-old Daniel Paul Laflin, and 19-year-old Michael Thomas Zdanukiewicz.

In a case that drew international attention, one of two young men who broke into a home occupied by a 13-year-old girl who hid next to her bed was ordered to spend 13 to 30 years in prison.

Daniel P. Laflin, 20, of Clinton Township, was sentenced by Macomb County Judge Diane Druzinski after pleading guilty to home invasion, conspiracy to commit home invasion, felony firearm and resisting arrest related to illegally entering the Harrison Township home of Chloe Symington.

Laflin and cohort Michael Zdanukiewicz stole Christmas gifts and other items from her home.

One of the two men walked past her in her bedroom while Symington whispered to the dispatcher.

Laflin’s sentence was within but near the top of the sentencing guideline range of seven to 15 years for the minimum. The range was much higher than would be for a first-time offender due to Laflin’s prior convictions. In fact, Laflin was participating in Adult Drug Court under circuit Judge Druzinski’s guise when he committed the home invasion, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Zemke said Laflin has battled addiction for some time, and while in drug court got addicted to K2, which at the time was not detectable in drug screenings.

“He’s made a number of bad choices while addicted to drugs,” Zemke said. “He’s a good kid. He’s young. He’s done a lot of stupid things. He’s a lot better kid than his record indicates.”

Zdanukiewicz, who also was 19 at the time of the incident, received a special sentence for youth, the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act, which allows defendants aged 17 through 20 to have the conviction erased from their record as long as they comply with the judge’s conditions for up to three years.

Zdanukiewicz had no criminal record and was among the top of his graduating class at Clintondale High School.

Meanwhile, the judge revoked Laflin’s HYTA for a 2009 auto larceny and garage burglary case out of St. Clair Shores.

Laflin also was sentenced Thursday to two to five years in prison on a 2011 conviction of attempted home invasion, for which he was on probation at the time of the Symington home invasion.
