An 11-year-old boy left in charge of his younger brother hid the two of them in a closet and called 911 when burglars broke into their Jacksonville, Florida, home in July 2007. Both boys came out unharmed, and officers found no one still inside.

Rayshaun Wagner was babysitting his 5-year-old brother, Raylan, at the family's Westside house on Fox Creek Drive around noon on July 25 when he heard a downstairs window shatter, according to the Florida Times-Union. Four strangers had been lurking outside the residence.

Rayshaun told his brother to stay quiet, took him by the shirt collar and moved him into the closet off the master bathroom, the newspaper reported. He then ran back to his parents' bedroom and hit the panic button on the home alarm before returning to the closet with a cordless phone to dial 911.

"911, somebody just broke into our house. We're all alone. Please help us!" he whispered to the dispatcher, according to a recording of the call. "My brother's 5. Please help us! Please! I'm scared."

Sheriff's Office dispatcher Sydney McClurkin, then 21 and about a year into the job, stayed on the line for the roughly 10 minutes it took patrol officers to reach the home. "He was doing everything I told him to," McClurkin told the Times-Union. "He acted just like an adult."

As officers arrived at the front door, Rayshaun guided his brother out of the dark. "Raylan, hold my hand," he said on the recording. Officers checked the house and found nothing missing and no one else inside.

The boys' mother, Rolanda Wagner, said she regularly ran safety drills with her sons, including one the previous Saturday. Her husband was away on a six-month Navy deployment to Cuba at the time, she told the newspaper, and she counted on the boys to look after each other while she was out.
