Tasmanian Devil Officially Endangered
22 May 2009 The status of the tasmanian devil has been upgraded from vulnerable to endangered. The devil population has declined by up to 70 per cent over the past 13 years, as the deadly facial tumour disease continues to spread. The Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett said the devil's new status on the endangered list will give it greater protection. "This is a recognition of the many threats that the tassie devil does face." "This means there will be additional protection under the national environment law," he said. The marsupial's population has been devastated by the facial tumour disease, a cancer spread by biting. The disease is one of only two known contagious cancers. The Minister's announcement in Hobart this morning was disrupted by a group of local protesters. Protesters from the conservation group Still Wild Still Threatened chanted over the top of his announcement and tried to block his exit. The tumour disease has wiped out 70 per cent of the population.
