Colour Photographs of Russia (1909-1912)

here's an explanation of why the pictures are such high quality

In those years, photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) undertook a photographic survey of the Russian Empire with the support of Tsar Nicholas II. He used a specialized camera to capture three black and white images in fairly quick succession, using red, green and blue filters, allowing them to later be recombined and projected with filtered lanterns to show near true color images. The high quality of the images, combined with the bright colors, make it difficult for viewers to believe that they are looking 100 years back in time - when these photographs were taken, neither the Russian Revolution nor World War I had yet begun. Collected here are a few of the hundreds of color images made available by the Library of Congress, which purchased the original glass plates back in 1948.

Awesome, guttsy! Captures the start of communism, without doubt the biggest mistake of last century.

Everybody is so down on communism, its inferior to free market society; however communism would help a lot of third world countries. People have to realize the concept of "gained wealth" is only about three-hundred years old. Communism destroys the noble class and puts everyone on an even plane, its a healthy part of economic evolution [for countries willing to evolve that is].

Totally depends on the flavour of communism you're talking about, but sure as fuck the Stalin variety resulted in little but death and misery. Does seem to me that life in Cuba is a whole lot better than in a lot of Latin American countries though.

Yeah the US killed trade with Cuba so they're stuck. It was once a beautiful wealthy place with casinos and and hotels. The hotels are apartment buildings now for the most part. Why the fuck doesn't the US just take it over and make it another state. If Castro was the US he would have???

Why the fuck doesn't the US just take it over and make it another state.
Why doesn't the US simply remove the sanctions/embargoes? After all, the cold war is over, and the USA and China are now joined at the hip.
