Wrong-way Driver Plows into Dozens of Jogging L.A. Law Enforcement Recruits

A wrong-way driver plowed into dozens of law enforcement recruits early Wednesday near Los Angeles, critically injuring five and costing some their limbs, authorities said.

The 75 recruits were running in formation on a training exercise a little before 6:30 a.m. PT near the Los Angeles County sheriff's academy just outside Whittier, officials said.

The recruits were moving north on Mills Avenue, just north of Telegraph Road, when a car in southbound lanes veered into them, authorities said.

Twenty-five recruits were injured — 16 with minor wounds, four listed in moderate and stable condition and five in critical condition, one of them breathing with a ventilator, officials said.

The academy includes recruits from other Southern California police agencies. Two each of the 25 injured were from the Bell and Glendale police departments, one came from Pasadena forces, and the remaining 20 were Los Angeles sheriff’s recruits, officials said.

A 22-year-old man from nearby Diamond Bar was detained at the scene as the California Highway Patrol investigates, authorities said. He passed a field sobriety test and blew a 0.0 in his blood alcohol check, Sheriff Alex Villanueva said.

"So the cause of the accident, motive, anything, is unknown at this time," Villanueva told reporters. "And now we're just facing some life-altering injuries."

“The range of injuries we have, obviously, are head trauma, we have broken bones, we’ve had some loss of limb, for example,” he added. “Those are the severe range of injuries. These are life-threatening injuries.”

I assumed it was a typo, then assumed that it was the 'wrong day' because it was 'recruits marching down the road day' and they wouldnt have been there if it was the 'right day', which would have been 'nobody in the way day'

Re: Wrong-way Driver Plows into Dozens of Jogging L.A. Law Enforcement Recruits

update, posted 2 hours ago.

"Due to the extreme complexity of the investigation, which includes ongoing interviews, video surveillance review, and additional evidence needed to be analyzed, homicide investigators have released the 22 year old suspect from the Sheriff’s Department custody today at approximately 9:55 PM.

Authorities identified N.G. as the driver of an SUV that veered onto the wrong side of the road early Wednesday in the suburban Whittier area, where a sheriff’s academy facility is located.

Five of the recruits were critically injured and two remained in critical condition Thursday afternoon, according to the department.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva said at a news conference a few hours after the crash that “so far, it looks like it’s an accident, a horrific accident,” but N.G. was arrested later that afternoon.

Villanueva told NewsNation on Thursday that investigators believe the crash was a “deliberate act” and that there was probable cause to make the arrest.

But he said N.G. was going to be “provisionally” released “until we can have the case iron clad, iron proof, and submitted to the DA for filing consideration. Right now, we want to tie up all the loose ends on the case and then present it to the DA.”

It will be up to the county district attorney to decide whether N.G. will be charged and for what offense. N.G. could not be reached for comment and it was unclear if he has a lawyer.

The case has not been formally referred to the district attorney’s office for prosecution. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office said in an email that sheriff’s and highway patrol authorities advised late Thursday that they wouldn’t be presenting a case at this time and that the suspect would be released.

Laurie Levenson, a former federal prosecutor and criminal law professor at Loyola Law School who isn’t affiliated with the case, said attempted murder usually means there was intent to kill and the driver wasn’t simply distracted or didn’t lose control of the vehicle.

In an interview before the driver’s release, Levenson also said a key question is whether the sheriff’s department can perform an objective evaluation given that the agency’s recruits were victims of the crash. That’s why it’s also important that prosecutors review the evidence and ultimately be the ones who decide, she added.

"They’ve gone after the highest possible charge — there is no doubt about it,” Levenson said of investigators. “The question is whether they are objective enough in evaluating this given that the crime was committed against their own. We’ve got to see what the evidence shows.”
