Wrong-way Driver Caused Big Rig to Fly Off I-45

A woman traveling the wrong direction on I-45 caused a head-on crash, sending a big rig falling onto the Downtown Aquarium parking lot below, Houston police said Friday.

The crash happened in the early-morning hours, shutting down the freeway’s southbound lanes near I-10 for several hours.

Police told KHOU 11's Janel Forte that a woman, 56, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the Pierce Elevated when she crashed into the 18-wheeler. The truck fell about 30 feet and was demolished on the parking lot below.

The crash was caught on surveillance video.

It is incredible that both drivers survived the incident, but both were taken to the hospital with various injuries. The big rig driver, 65, suffered lacerations and was placed in a neck brace before being loaded into an ambulance. Even still, authorities at the scene described his injuries as "minor."

The freeway’s southbound lanes were blocked until after 7 a.m. so hazmat crews could clean up fuel and investigators could check out the Pierce Elevated for any damage. The freeway has since fully reopened.

If I was driving a big rig, I wouldn't even try evasive action. Why get killed for some drunk? Straight head on, and fuck her!

Re: Wrong-way Driver Caused Big Rig to Fly Off I-45

Throughout the investigation, police discovered Carrie Edens, 56, was driving northbound in southbound lanes and had a head-on collision with the 18-wheeler. The woman said she was going to the bank and then to pick up her daughter during the time of the accident. She is now facing DWI charges.

Edens has a broken leg, police said. She has other prior arrests, including driving with a suspended license and drug possession charges.

Fuck that cunt

Sukhjit Khara owns the big rig that crashed and received a call from a tow truck driver informing him his vehicle was involved in the accident.

Initially, Khara wasn’t sure which truck was involved in the accident, but after placing several calls he realized the driver of the truck was his 65-year-old father, Baltej Singh.

“I was panicked, I was tearing, I started crying,” said Singh.

At first, he wasn’t sure if his father survived the crash. When he called the tow truck driver back, they informed him that his father survived the 50-foot plummet.

Khara eventually spoke with Singh after he was taken to the hospital. According to Khara, Singh said he saw the wrong-way driver, tried to get out of the way, but the driver swerved in front of him so he yanked his wheel and the big rig tumbled off the highway and fell below.

“We are lucky he survived,” said Khara.

Re: Wrong-way Driver Caused Big Rig to Fly Off I-45

I am to the point in my life that if I am going to drink, I stay home....yeah, I know about the whole drinking alone, but if I am alone, who is going to know....... I certainly don't want to end up like this stupid lady!

I drive a motorcycle, and it's the most logical and safest way of thinking.

A. They are drunk, so obviously didn't care. So now you are going to risk YOUR life?
What would be the reasoning behind that?

B. My training as a motorcycle rider teaches us to evaluate the situation, and decide almost instantly if any action you take is going to be better or worse for you.
With animals, the answer is nearly always NO. All you can do is lose control, have the accident anyway, and possibly kill yourself. YOU DRIVE STRAIGHT AHEAD AND KEEP CONTOL OF YOUR BIKE. I agree that avoiding the accident could be best, IF YOU HAVE TIME AND SPACE. But swerving a heavy load all over the road could not only kill you, but several other drivers, NONE OF WHOM WERE DRIVING DRUNK AND WHO PLACED THIS SITUATION IN FRONT OF YOU.
I stand by my judgement. For this situation, it is most correct to stay stable, and take the head-on impact, and then, having maintained control of your machine, come to a halt on the side of the road, safely, with no other injuries or deaths caused by an out-of-control semi sweeping across 3 lanes of traffic.
You can see a huge number of accidents with heavy trucks, both here, and on Youtube, that confirm my judgement. Watch a few and tell me what you think.

Re: Wrong-way Driver Caused Big Rig to Fly Off I-45

Mr. William May, I wholeheartedly agree with your rationale.
Well, they cover this pretty thoroughly in rider training, complete with videos. It made quite an impression on me. So far, I have managed to anticipate every accident that nearly happened, and avoid it. In 25 years of riding in Tucson, which is considered a really dangerous city for motorcyclists, I've never had an accident.
It truly would be nice to spare the drunk, but that is not always possible. And I sure wouldn't sacrifice MY life to save theirs.
They made that decision for me, when they got on the road, drunk.
All I would think about is others, besides the drunk driver.

Re: Wrong-way Driver Caused Big Rig to Fly Off I-45

That poor bastard was just out there trying to support his family. Now his son’s bread and butter is destroyed and you know they are going to have to fight the fucking insurance companies. I don’t know how it is in Texas, but Florida is, for better of for worse, a no-fault state. It sucks, but you have to deal with it. Most of the time, the other guy doesn’t even have collision. I carry full coverage on my Mustang and RAM, even though I just paid them off, as well as uninsured motorist. You almost have to these days. Assholes like this drunk cunt make it almost mandatory to cover thine own arse.
