Woman Mowed Down While Crossing The Road
A video captured the death of Miriam Lorenzo, a 56-year-old woman who died on the morning of Friday, September 11, after being struck by a vehicle on the CA-5 highway near Villanueva, in Cortés, northern Honduras. She was accompanied by another woman and a young girl as they attempted to cross the road when the tragedy occurred. The woman accompanying her confirmed that Miriam was her mother-in-law and the grandmother of the young girl. It was also reported that the victim was a mother of eight and lived in Dos Caminos, Villanueva. A security camera captured the moment of the pedestrian collision. The footage shows the three pedestrians crossing after a passing vehicle stopped to yield the right-of-way to them. However, Miriam lagged behind, at which point an alleged taxi driver struck her, causing her death. Following the circulation of the video, social media users expressed shock and dismay over the little girl's cries, which can be heard in the footage. Comments included: "Damn, how that little girl screams," "The child's scream," and "What trauma for that little girl." As of publication, the exact cause of the crash remains unknown, and driver liability has not yet been determined. It was confirmed that the suspected taxi driver remained at the scene following the incident. Police officers took him into custody while conducting their investigation. At the end of July of this year, the National Directorate of Roads and Transportation (DNVT) reported that pedestrians are involved in 25% of all traffic accidents in Honduras. Individuals over the age of 54 represent the demographic with the highest number of pedestrian traffic fatalities. |
