Dec 31, 2025. A 70-year-old woman her saree (sari) caught fire while she was warming herself by a roadside fire.

The victim, identified as K.D, succumbed to her injuries after a 12 days treatment at Gorakhpur Medical College.

According to information, she had lost her husband, N.S. and is survived by her only son, who is completely disabled.

On December 31, she was wearing a sweater with a shawl draped over it when her saree suddenly caught fire from the flames.

In panic, she got up and began running on the road in an attempt to douse the fire, screaming for help.

In the footage, she can be seen engulfed in flames, narrowly missing an e-rickshaw while running.

People who got down from the vehicle rushed to help and tried to extinguish the fire by throwing clothes and a blanket over her.

The woollen garments caught fire quickly and it took nearly five minutes to put out the flames.

By then, she had suffered severe burns on her feet, back, stomach and chest, covering around 80 per cent of her body. She later collapsed unconscious.

Kind of surprising she died.

She wasn’t on fire for very long. Maybe it was all the people beating the flames too hard..

It would be unfortunate if there was an autopsy and the finding was she died from blunt force trauma!

Two comments about the incident.

First, flammability of loose-fitting clothing. I'm guessing standards on those sorts of things might not be very high in some countries.

Second, kids in the countries I have lived in are taught to lie down and roll if their clothing catches fire. Running around fanning the flames and remaining upright so they can spread is not a good strategy.

A sari sight, for sure.
