A collision involving a tractor-trailer, a school bus and other vehicles killed a woman and injured eight people, including two students, Wednesday in Clinton, Md.

Two teenage students on the bus, the bus driver and three other people were taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, according to Mark Brady, a spokesman for the Prince George’s County Fire Department.

Information about the extent of their injuries was not available.
Two people declined to be taken to a hospital, Brady said.

Prince George’s police responded at 6:13 a.m. to the crash, which involved several vehicles on Surratts Road near Branch Avenue in southern Prince George’s County.

The tractor-trailer, school bus and other vehicles collided for “reasons that remain under investigation,” police said.
The woman who died was driving one of the vehicles and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her name was not being released Wednesday.
Officials with the county school system said the bus was heading to Charles H. Flowers High School.
Hazmat crews cleaned up fluids that leaked from the vehicles.

Traffic backups extended about seven miles during the morning rush as authorities closed roads during the investigation. All lanes were reopened about 2 p.m.
The crash occurred about three miles south of Joint Base Andrews.

Prince George's County Police Chief Hank Stawinski pointed out that the intersection is sloped on each side and compared it to the bottom of a bowl, making it extra dangerous.

"If you're texting while driving, if you're not buckled up, this is one of those places that because of the geography you can have worse outcomes," Stawinski said.

The truck driver's wife, Jeanine Guzman, said her husband is a safe driver who has driven trucks for a long time.

"He doesn't smoke; he doesn't drink. Nothing," she said.
