WELD COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - Newly released body camera footage of a train smashing into a law enforcement vehicle shows just how remarkable a Colorado woman’s survival was.

The video shows the train barreling towards the cruiser as the woman sat helplessly handcuffed in the back seat.

According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the woman -- since identified as 20-year-old Y.R.-G. of Greeley -- had been detained on suspicion of road rage following a traffic stop on the night of Sept. 16. She was believed to be involved an incident in Fort Lupton involving a driver with a gun and was found up the road in Platteville at Highway 85 and County Road 36. A Platteville officer pulled Rios-Gonzalez over, and CBI says she stopped just past the railroad tracks. The officer parked behind her -- right on the train tracks.

Two Fort Lupton officers then arrived on scene and detained 'Y' on suspicion of felony menacing. She was placed in the back of the Platteville police cruiser, which was still sitting on the tracks.


“While the officers cleared the suspect vehicle as part of the investigation, a train traveling northbound struck the PPD patrol car,” CBI said.

The body camera footage captures the sound of a train horn just over a minute after 'Y' was put in the police car. Then, more horns blare. After those several horns go off, the footage shows the officers realizing that their suspect was in the path of an oncoming train. They were unable to reach her in time, and the vehicle was crushed.

The woman is expected to survive, though she remained in the hospital as of Sunday with numerous broken bones and other injuries. No officers were hurt.

The Fort Lupton Police Department is investigating the original road rage incident, while Colorado State Patrol is the lead on the crash investigation. CBI says it was requested to investigate the circumstances around the woman being seriously hurt while in police custody.

It’s unclear why the officer parked his cruiser on the tracks.
