Hey it’s happened before -

We all came out to Montreux
On the Lake Geneva shoreline
To make records with a mobile
We didn't have much time
Frank Zappa and the Mothers
Were at the best place around
But some stupid with a flare gun
Burned the place to the ground

With that extensive of an explosion, I think that was natural gas. Makes sense that the nutcase was trying to ignite a house full of gas with an incendiary device like a flare gun. He must have been disappointed when his initial attempts failed. Stupidity probably fouled up his initial suicide attempts such as a forced air HVAC evacuating and diluting the gas.
