Two Ships (a Bulk Carrier and a Cargo Ship) Collide in the Straits of Singapore

Quote:
Two ships (a bulk carrier and a cargo ship) collide in the Straits of Singapore. The Singaporean Coastguard was called to rescue crew members of the smaller vessel.

The 2 boats, which appeared to be bulk carriers, were reportedly transiting the Straits of Singapore when one cargo ship passed too close to the other.

The Singaporean coast guard was then called in to rescue the crew of the smaller boat, which reportedly began sinking after the accident.

No casualties were reported.

While passing the Strait of Singapore, the "Beks Halil" was in collision with a smaller bulk carrier which was suddenly veering across its course.

Video footage shows the smaller vessel veering to port and across the course of the "Beks Halil" which was underway from Haldia to Navlakhi at that time.

The smaller cargo vessel was hit on port side in the aft after it was unable to stop or alter course for the larger ship.

The Singapore Coast Guard was called to the incident but there were no reports of any injuries.

It's every captain's worst nightmare. A 57,000-tonne bulk carrier steaming out of Singapore suddenly has a smaller vessel veering across its path.

The incident - caught on video by crew members from another ship nearby - happened in the crowded Singapore Strait, which leads in and out of the world's busiest port.

The footage shows the smaller vessel veering to port (its left) and across the course of the much larger ship.

The bulk carrier nudges the cargo vessel The collision is inevitable, as the massive BEKS line tanker is unable to stop or alter course.

The Singapore Coast Guard was called to the incident but there were no reports of any injuries.

Re: Two Ships (a Bulk Carrier and a Cargo Ship) Collide in the Straits of Singapore

Dang! I could only play it once. The captain of the following ship is a Titanic Asshole. It was all up to him from the moment he got so close. He could of slowed down or turned away or both. The captain in the lead might of being going at his top speed so slowing down would of only made it worse. If he turned away his rudder would ram his ship into the following ship. If he turned to port he would of automatically slowed down and been struck anyways. He was trapped. The moment the following ship struck the lead ship it was game over for that lead ship. The only maneuver possible would be to try to speed up and I am sure he must of tried. Once his ship was going sideways.... there was nothing much either one could do except the ramming ship could of tried to slow down at that point.
Someone needs to have his license pulled and be hauled into court on criminal charges.

This report I think is some self serving bullshit. There is no way a ship being overtaken that closely can maneuver away. Also the overtaking ship has a bow wave in that the water to the sides speeds up and creates a back suction that will further cause the ship being overtaken to veer into the ship coming up from behind. No ship captain expects or anticipates that an overtaking ship will not follow the rules and change course. Also, the course that the Beks ship took looks suspicious.

Quote:
I don't see a vessel veering intentionaly to port...I see instead a vessel out of control due to the proximity of a larger vessel...the bow wave probably start pushing the stern of the vessel...and that's it...you come to 90 degrees of you initial course without knowing it! I remember my father had almost the same problem on the St lawrence. he was being overtaken by a larger and much faster vessel and then we lost all steering and went to a 90 degrees sharp turn just in front another vessel upbnd (we were dnbnd).
But who was at the bridge on the BEKS HALIL bulk carrier ?...somebody suggest that the officer left the bridge for few moments leaving the o/b alone...we'll see...
~Hubert Desgagnés
As far as I can tell Hubert is a Canadian sea captain with the Canadian Coast Guard.

Quote:
This demonstrates the dangers of interaction between vessels manoeuvreing at close quarters. The vessel being overtaken takes a shear across the bows of the overtaking vessel due to pressure from the overtaking vessels bow. The overtaking vessel appears to have not been keeping clear.
Maybe the captain of the Beks ship should be charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
I've got a theory, the Beks captain is outbound and has a close encounter with the other vessel where the other vessal refuses to give way. So Beks changes course and overtakes the other vessel and rams it. I would like to see the course changes for both ships. That would really tell the tale.
